POEM - A Snap of the Fingers Makes the Penny Buzz

I learned the trick many years ago
Newly landed in San Bernardino
On a smoggy, sunny spring morning
Hanging with Trevor at lunch
He was the one who taught me the technique

“You just hold it between your thumb and middle finger
            And snap it! Like that!”
The copper coin buzzed across the room
Clinked into the wall
Left a little divot in the paint
                        Very cool!

I started to collect my pennies
Had a few dollars’ worth to practice with
Kept going until I littered the floor
Until I got them to buzz every time
Left divot after divot of my own
Along with miniature bas relief Lincolns
                        Or similar half-finished impressions
Of his DC memorial with “ONE C”
In a curve below the steps

As boys and projectiles often do
It wasn’t long before we took aim at each other
Oh, the battles that we waged!
The whoosh of the near miss
                        The hum of darting currency
As each of us dove for ammunition
            Or ducked to avoid welts

The best shot I ever made was at Trevor’s expense
It was a typical day at lunch
A small skirmish had broken out
                        Minor casualties and minimal aggression
But something escalated quite accidently
Perhaps I accidently skimmed one of his head
Or it was just a Tuesday
However it happened, I found myself prostrate
Diving and scrounging for a penny
                        As Trevor stood fully poised
To rain down certain death upon me
At that moment my fingers found purchase
I grasped a single coin in my firing hand
Snapped my fingers
            And watched in sudden slow-mo
As the coin made a beeline
To its armed cousin in Trevor’s fingers
It was a moment frozen by impossibility
I had shot the penny out of Trevor’s hand!
Like some kind of climatic scene
            In every Western shoot-out ever

These days he claims ignorance
Says I’m just making up stories
But we both know the truth
As I fake a lunge at him
He still flinches, and gives me a dirty look
            Subconsciously reaches for his pocket
Contemplates a retaliatory shot
I put on my Cheshire grin
The same one I wore
As I watched that penny fly out of his hand

POEM - Eddie and Bela

Run from a nightmare you told me about that makes you work, work to work if not to be understood and only to be loved for loving.
Last night was a good one that was one gooder than the one that you thought was your best and dressed you were lost in angora.
Look back and see that the mind that you are was the mind that could be only in delusion and contorted to find solution.
The streets of LA are mean and nasty and your nasty mean landlord and your banker and the priest you fooled are bound to get nastier.
Nastier could be an understatement since the guy from the Shakespeare gig looks like a fool on film forever more.
I tripped and we tripped and in tripping along to the next shot or the next lost cause and it was all lost causes and you shrunk back.
We never shrunk back until all the causes we fought for were soaked up in bad days and bad projects and the B-movies you fell to.
Falling was what it was all about it was and always is about falling and falling with a style that looked like a planned tumble.
Planned to twist a certain way to wear a certain dress to walk a certain talk and get a few to see it your way just once.
They all saw it your way and it was all the way Bela saw it that made it work and he believed you and that made everything work.
It all was a vision that Bela made true for a few weeks, a few days and the minutes dragged and then Bela dragged and slowed.
Slowing is dying and that's what you believed and the slowness killed the movie and killed the star and Bela was dead long too soon.
Sooner for dying and soon as if to die was to not remember that shows were going on and on and would go on and stop was not is.
Not even a stop that was law or was money or was talent or was any good sense of when to stop it all was not stop just try.
Eddie you're trying and trying is not doing but the California air is a death nail for you so breath slow most eager son of fortune.
It was a fever that got you and got her and him and they all caught it like pneumonia only more deadly and more of nothing to live for.
But caught they were and caught they remained until a skip on the record and jump to the next sound, screech, squeek, scream.
The plans fell like dominoes and they fell before they were beautiful and it was one then two then a dozen then Nine came alone.
Plan 9 was horror and science and none of it well done only done quickly and with friends and innocents and it lasted too long.
It lasted too long and is now famous and you are now lasting not before you were forgotten and that before you were immortalized.
The fame you won won its own and not yours it won for itself and it was a bad win and you are lucky to be dead to avoid the shame.
You tried as hard as Welles and "Citizen Kane" betrayed you and it was a sucker punch from left field in the groin that caught true.
I saw the worst mind of my generation splayed open and dashed against flimsy reels of black and white crucifixion two stories high.
It was never meant to be and "Plan 9" was a bad run and maybe if Bela had lived it would have worked better and maybe the money too.
It all died just too soon and the dawn rose too quick and your skirts were too short and the women loved you but misunderstood.
You thought it was right and it was for them but the girls never got you when the girls were worth getting the getting was far gone.
The new girls came too soon and they walked through those films like it was nothing to be naked and dirty and awful not art not really.
It was film and it was film and film was your breath and your blood and the freaks understood and the naked unwashed were willing.
The girls worth having never understood and the ones who understood aren't worth having and all of them are the same, just memory.
If I was to touch your shoulder in kindness would you cry too much I hear you cry so often when no one watches too close too near.
No one is ever near you are a distant time in penciled mustache and high heels untouchable and beautiful all fury and nothing.
If nothing then all and the only one left not afraid and unconvinced that the film would still come and the picture still live.
Bela was coming back soon and no grave could hold Dracula for long he was eternal and he will come one morning like a dark dawn slowly.
Then the picture will live and the picture will be true to a vision you tucked away at the funeral by his side the only last friend.
It was something wasn't it something that thing that you did that spark in their lives of this old man and this crew all outcasts.
Not outcasts any more and it makes the old man feel good and gives him the reason to walk out the front door to wave and to smile.
Bela lived for you Eddie and wanted to live longer even though the drugs said otherwise and the pain called the drugs.
You called and told him it was alright that he was worth everything he and the pain happens and the drugs happen but it’s all real.
And that's what it was Eddie and that phone call you just took was not unexpected but the daylight is repelled right around you.
This is darker than the old monster flicks you sat through and saw come to life with an idol for a friend but the scene fades now.
He's OK now Eddie and you won't outlast this pain but you'll live a little longer and try a little harder and laugh a little, laugh.
We all laugh at your masterpiece and we all still wonder what you were thinking and if you knew what it was and how it would come off.
And I wonder if you know if you are Glen or are you Glenda and would it matter and who made the film and who screwed it up.
A junkie you were just different and proud and the junkie you saved was old and it was a lost cause but lost causes were your thing.
And lost all along was a cause to be had and a cause worth having and a girl worth having were never yours to have and watch out, Eddie.
Bela won't stay dead long and the time may come that that California air doesn't give in and the drug of life will give out; gone.
Bela dance with Eddie he has a beautiful new chiffon and the ruby slippers he stole from Dorothy on the back lot of Oz.
Step one and step two and step 9 with beautiful Glenda and keep alert for the right hook from Glen and his strong arm in a soft shrug.

POEM - “Almost Heaven, West Virginia . . .”

Spiraling out of the sky
The plane slides into Clarksburg
The flight from Pittsburgh exhilarating
In a two-row prop plane
Flying just high enough
That you had to squint
To see the startled faces of the cows below

Linda’s uncle was waiting for us
A gruff old ex-military assembly line lifer
A total softy she assures me
I am spared a view of his famous tattoos
The ones over each breast
The ones that read “Sweet” and “Sweeter”

We are here to claim the leftovers
The mementos of Grandma’s house
That my Father-in-law failed to retrieve
When he ended up DOA
Exiting from the same room he had entered
            Nearly sixty years before

We arrived at the two story haunted house
Still reeling from the tragedy
The one that awoke us one May morning
Letting us know Randy had died in his sleep

Everything was still sitting around
His new white Suburban
All the boxes they’d packed
The house and the land
And every last ancestor as well
The place was stuffed to the rafters
With the dearly departed
Who refused to depart

Who can blame them
The cemetery was just down the hill
They could see the house from where they lay
Why hang around in the dirt and worms
When everyone was spittin’ and cussin’
Carrying on and having a good time
                        Back up at the house

We tried to stay the whole night
Up on the second floor
Right next to where her father had died
Surrounded by the generations
Of mischievous backwoods coal miners

It was not a restful night
Those jerks kept screwing with us
            Probably thought it was hilarious
It was really just annoying
            All we wanted was sleep
What we got was a 3am departure
Down a road dense with fog

On the stereo John Denver played
It was one of Randy’s favorites
As John sang of these country roads
And the mountains so old and knowing
We could feel the old home disappear behind
            Along with every passing mile
Letting us shake off the melancholy
As we drenched ourselves in tears
Driving on until the sun rose over Ohio
Leaving West Virginia just a foggy memory

POEM - This Ancestral Tangle

There are stories told
At family reunions
            Or on long vacation drives
About being related here and there
To this person or the other
I always wonder what is true

Am I really related to the Mayflower folks?
Are we really English and Russian and Swiss?
Or is it Swedish and Scottish and French?

What hat should I wear,
As I head out each day?
Turns out more than I thought

I know my pioneer heritage
Going way back on both sides
We have been Westerners now
For many generations
But drop back a few generations
Things get a lot more wild

Before the west some went south
South Carolina to be precise
I have returned there for unknown reasons
Feeling a sense of home
Sure it was all just in my head
Only to find out more correctly
It is in my blood

Those folks came from Scotland
Stopping briefly in Virginia
Before that England where I lose the trail
Of a name changed
Four different times since 1146
Steddanham, Le Stedeman, Stedman, Steedman
Until it settled on Steadman for now

But they stopped in Virginia long enough
To make an historical connection
As a wily trader married a Powhatan princess
A fascinating union
From amidst of the earliest settlers

And they seem at first like only names
            Showing where they were born
                        Who they married
                                    Where they died
But it is enough to turn my heart
Make me look back
            To my fathers and mothers
Feeling there are stories yet untold
Desiring to help those stories be heard

POEM - The Go-Cart

The rural roads outside Corvallis
Lead in many directions
One is out into a little farm community
It is known as Philomath
            For unknown reasons
Somebody’s delusions of grandeur
That ended up being a few farming homesteads

I googled Philomath
It doesn’t even come up first
It means a seeker of knowledge
            Perhaps that fits
A place of seekers, not possessors
It has a hopeful tint to it

When I lived there I was 6 or 7
            A committed seeker of trouble
I looked through the barn
Met the cows and the tractors
Saw the hay in the shed
The wood pile under the house
The abandoned cages and pens

One day my dad showed me some lumber
He also showed me some machinery
An odd wheel or two
            And a length of rope
I was less aware in those days
Perhaps I had seen the materials before
But today I noticed and understood
We were building a go-cart

I’m sure it took some time to make
Though I don’t recall the waiting
One night I saw the parts
The next day I was sitting in the cart
Right at the top of the driveway
A gentle breeze nudging the grass
I held still
In taught anticipation
Bursting with potential energy
Half listening to my father
As he gave a few last minute tips

The release came like sunlight
My sense of reality altered instantly
As I headed down the dirt road
Gaining speed and avoiding death
I moved with grace and elation
Down, down, through the first flat
Over the last drop
            And into the main yard
Thrilled by the speedy descent
Impatiently dragging the cart up the drive
A passionate Philomath
            Seeker of thrilling knowledge

POEM - The Bag Holder

Sitting in the waiting room
Like I have before
With the same people
Linda and I with Veronica in between
Veronica has a headache again
It seems like they aren’t listening again
So she huddles in the fetal position
Like she did a decade ago

This time the prognosis is better
It only took two trips
            Both to the Emergency Room
On the second one we tattled
On the young condescending doctor
Who told us were traumatized

Umm, obviously you don’t know us
Just two months ado
We put off taking in Veronica
For a good four weeks
When she got mononucleosis
            At levels 600 times higher
                        Than are normally seen

This time it was a bad infection
So the trip was justified
But not traumatic
Which we were grateful for

Not like ten years ago
When a tumor was un-thought of
After the surgery was different too
Things had to synch back up
Connections had to restart
Like the Police she sought Synchronicity
Like Green Day she was starting with Brain Stew

The funniest thing were the tests
We had one where she had to be sleep deprived
So we went to a midnight show
Saw that movie “Hidalgo”
We were the only ones there
Until the concession stand guys rolled in
They had a massive bag of popcorn
Left over, temporarily retained
They stayed until they were bored
Then gave us the whole bag

All of this I’m thinking about
Dozing in the examination room
Trying to be supportive
Actually very tired
Never getting to sit in the comfy bed
Always left holding the bag

POEM - Reasons to be Fat

Global warming favors the zaftig
The pleasantly plump don’t fear as snow caps melt
Trust me, I know of what I speak
I have spent years in pursuit of gluttony
Frittered away the hours with fritters
In slothful doughnut-ty bliss

I’d say it was my passion
But that sounds a lot like work
A mere pastime is all this is
A way to fill the void
            Between doing nothing and sleep

I even felt guilt at times
Watching the fit folk fleet of foot fly by
As I languidly lingered
Lazily afloat in my pool
Sublime repose; a living raft
I laughingly called it swimming
But really I’d just bob and toss
Swayed by each ripple of the wind
Indifferent

Then the unthinkable happened
I decided to get in shape
Walk instead of shuffle
Ride my bike instead of the recliner
I became trim,
                        svelte,
                                    sexy . . .
Muscular and vibrant:
A fine specimen
The picture of health
An inspiration

I triumphantly returned to the pool
Giddy joy coursing through cholesterol free veins
Eager to glide effortlessly through the azure world
A new aquatic creature of awe and prowess

Glide I did
And then I sank
Like the chiseled stone
I had come to resemble
Then I sank further
Confused and depressed
Until it hit me:

Fat Floats

And as I walked across the bottom
I thought of life preservers
And round fluffy rings

Surely jelly donuts are better training
For when the world heats up

As the oceans take over
The fatties will float to the top!

POEM - Lee, Lou & Lon

My wife said it was time
I needed to write a poem
One about my brothers
That’s a hard thing to do
You can get in a lot of trouble
Siblings are those people you love
Despite what you know about them
And you know enough to destroy them
So it is treacherous ground

I could start with Lon
The precocious youngest brother
Always seemed to get weird injuries
Had polyps as a young kid
A severed tendon in his finger
When someone closed a lid on it
Bumps and bruises galore
One time my mom  was talking to him
Asked him why he got hurt so much
His response was brilliant
He said in his matter of fact way
"When you have brains and bones, things happen"

Then there is Quinn
A different breed from his other brothers
Quinn was the sporty one
The one who actually participated in school
Played in the band
            Tried to get good grades
The perfect middle child
A position he usurped from Lee
Got nick-named Lou by the Tucson gang
So he would match the other two boys
Quinn noticed what was going on
            Wanted something better
Just a hair less distracted
Than the rest of his A.D.D. family

What about that kid Lee?
He seems so nice a normal now
But we used to have to leash him up
Could climb anything to get a cookie
The only one to get the cops called on him
Twice
The first time he ran off to a friend’s house
Was gone for hours
Inspired a full blown search party
Then next time was by association
His friend had light fingers
And he was detained, but not charged
It probably didn’t help he had just shaved his head
All bald, except for a ponytail
Growing right out of the top of his forehead

POEM - Hot Rod Pinto

OK, here’s what happened, I swear
Melvin can tell you
He was there
Though he might need a minute
He’s a little freaked out

See, we were just driving around
Getting boxes for moving
Over in the industrial park
Yeah, the big one off Broadway
We were in the Pinto
            You know the one
                        The turd brown station wagon
I had just got it back running
Put a new stereo in it too!

Anyway, not the point, but the music was good
I think we had “Houses of the Holy” going
Though it could have been Fishbone
Or that Agent Orange he liked
                                    I can’t remember right now
                        But it was great!
            And loud
Right. The point is we were in the industrial park

Here’s how it went down:
Sometimes you see opportunities
They are so clear you just act
No thinking, just doing
Hoping it all turns out right
Knowing that it will be great
                        No matter the end result

So they had this truck bay
And the concrete sloped just right
And the road fell off just so
And I was at the right angle
So I gunned it
            Yelled to Mel, “Buckle Up!”

See, that’s what got him
He tried, you know he did
But, well, when he yanked the belt
            It detached completely
                        His hand just kept going
And his eyes grew to twice their size
Because, you see, it was too late
We were already there
Nearly airborne as I said it

We flew for a few moments
            A few exhilarating, magical moments
Until gravity took over just enough
            And we landed, perfectly
Melvin was still in tact
My dashboard, however, was not
As soon as we landed, a crashing sound
Then the entire instrument panel disappeared
As a shower of white dust covered my legs
From the aging plastic support structure
That shattered like safety glass

So that’s why my speedometer is looking lazy
The reason why I have to pull this string
                        To lift this gauge
And see how much gas I have
Why Melvin is having second thoughts
About riding in the passenger seat
