A Sad Poem

CeePs, You Crazy

A coward my first thought came taking your life
Only forty and what could possibly be so bad
Then I heard myself say something callus in reflection
there’s a lot of romance in suicide that I just don’t see
maybe it was something to blame on Jack White singing
there’s no home for you here girl, go away, there’s no home for you here
but that was some girl he didn’t love and was rejecting
you were a loved man of stature and renown
the celebrity in most people’s lives that knew you

then there’s the sad bird you left in the roost
she’s sobbin’ man, and can’t get the tears to stop
screaming like the lost raven she must become
a hovering dark protecting cloud in shield formation
over the five scraggly hatchlings not yet taught to fly
not sturdy enough yet to support the weight of your decision
they squeak and squawk in what voices they can find
the music you loved so much comes from elsewhere
I here a barrage of songs beating back at the figure you struck
The façade you constructed
                 The tears of a clown
                                 A solitary man
                                              A bridge over troubled waters
But you were the waters and you laid down
The bridge is left for others to build now

You made the sounds that covered the fury
So funny poor CeePs brought everyone along for his ride
A ride everyone wanted to be on whenever it came around
Just a moment here and a linger there and then off it went

Sorry about the coward comment, it was said in love
And we loved it all and it was all and we all loved it all
Until that was all there was
A memory and a sweet voice on the recording
How great thou art, how great thou art . . .
